About Helena

As a child I was fascinated by folksongs and French 'chansonniers'. Renaissance and baroque music became my first real love in the music academy. Opera and lied found a way to my heart through the conservatory. Traditional music never ceased to touch and tempt me. Arabic music crossed my path. This is who I am. This is how I sing.

Sopraan Helena Schoeters studeerde klassieke zang aan de conservatoria van Brussel en Antwerpen. Ze speelde mee in verschillende muziektheater- en dansproducties vormt een vast liedduo met pianiste Axelle Kennes.

Helena's interesse gaat echter verder dan het louter klassieke en ze vertoeft graag op plekken waar verschillende muzikale genres in elkaar overvloeien. Ze deelde het podium met artiesten als Dick Van der Harst, Henk De Laat, Philippe Thuriot, e.a. Ze maakt deel uit van Lami Trio, een ensemble met qanunspeler Osama Abdulrasol en cellist Lode Vercampt, waar Oost en West elkaar vinden.

Helena vormt met pianiste Axelle Kennis een liedduo met een passie voor verhalen. In hun programma 'L'invitation au voyage' nemen ze het publiek mee naar hoopvoller tijden. Met liederen van o.a. Chausson, Massenet, Hahn en Satie roepen ze de sfeer van de Belle Epoque op, een tijdperk vol oneindige mogelijkheden, verfijnde dromen, onbezorgdheid, vrolijkheid en grote ontdekkingen. Ook al zijn vertwijfeling en groeiende onzekerheid over de toekomst nooit ver weg.

In 'Cánticos de la Esposa' gaan Helena en Axelle op zoek naar liefde en geluk. Met aan de basis de liederen van Joaquín Rodrigo. Zijn Spaanse liederen, Sefardische klanken en Arabische invloeden zetten ons in een doolhof van steeds andere sferen. Ze stelden het programma samen als een lange stroom van gedachten, met verdriet, hoop en vleugjes vreugde.

from traditional Babylonian sounds, to jazz, classical and contemporary music. In his way of playing and in his compositions you will recognize both the mastership from the ancient Iraq, as well as the creativity and the open mind of the true cosmopolitan.

For this concert especially the quartet is joined by the Belgian soprano Helena Schoeters. In a unique way she mixes classical and traditional elements in her voice, which makes her the perfect interpretor of the compositions of Osama Abdulrasol.

Come and enter the musical universe of qanunplayer Osama Abdulrasol. With his quartet he takes you on a fascinating journey, from traditional Babylonian sounds, to jazz, classical and contemporary music.

In his way of playing and in his compositions you will recognize both the mastership from the ancient Iraq, as well as the creativity and the open mind of the true cosmopolitan. Osama's quartet consists of extraordinary musicians. Osama Abdulrasol captivates with the magical sound of his qanun (lapharp) in no time every kind of audience. Philippe Thuriot is one of the most virtuose and versatile accordion players of this moment, loved both in the world of contemporary jazz as the classical music scene. François Taillefer evoques with his unique collection of percussion instruments all the possible rhythms from India till the Middle East. Lode Vercampt excels as a cello player with his musicality and the versatility of sounds he can conjure from his instrument.
